Here are the 16 team college football playoff matchups...

The season is over so now lets settle it on the field.  These are the 16 teams based on wins & points allowed that have qualified for the playoffs.  Each game on a Saturday at a neutral site, so in 4 weeks you'll have your champion with the title game played someplace warm like Miami or Tampa or indoors like San Antonio or Dallas.  Here's how the first round would look....

#1 LSU 12-0 vs #16 Arkansas St 10-2
#2 Houston 12-0 vs #15 Oregon 10-2
#3 Alabama 11-1 vs #14 Arkansas 10-2
#4 Virginia Tech 11-1 vs #13 Southern Miss 10-2

#5 Boise St 11-1 vs #12 South Carolina 10-2
#6 Stanford 11-1 vs #11 Georgia 10-2
#7 Oklahoma St 11-1 vs #10 Michigan 10-2
#8 Wisconsin 10-2 vs #9 Michigan St 10-2

Remember, conference championships don't figure into my mix.  If you had a playoff system like this why bother with conference championships because you've got Wisconsin & Michigan St playing again along with Alabama & Arkansas going at it again too.  Skip the conference championship game and lets get right into the playoffs after everybody has played 12 games the 2nd Saturday in December.  10-2 TCU & Kansas State were the two left out in the cold because of too many points allowed, good luck in the bowl games where those who don't make this will play.

So lets look at this first round & I'll make some predictions.  My apologies to Robert Wuhl but I'm taking Oregon to beat #2 Houston first round & I think South Carolina can take Boise St out too.

Round 2 might look like this..
#1 LSU vs #8 Wisconsin
#7 Oklahoma St vs #15 Oregon
#3 Alabama vs #6 Stanford
#4 Virginia Tech vs #12 South Carolina

The final four...

#1 LSU vs #4 Virginia Tech
#3 Alabama vs #7 Oklahoma St

Which leads to #1 LSU vs #3 Alabama for all the marbles.  They loosen up this game and Alabama wins it 27-24 in one heck of a battle that could go either way Saturday Jan 7th.

Thank you all for taking time out for me this year.  Feel free to leave any comments you have or make your own predictions.  Have a great holiday season & we'll try it again come Oct 2012....

Last week before the playoffs!

It's the last regular season Saturday & there are some games still left not including the conference title games which as you know I'm not a fan of, but money makes the world go round.  Here's the 16 teams that are in it as of this week and three on the outside hoping for a little help....

1) LSU 12-0  127pa  lw #1
2) Houston 12-0  251pa  lw #2
3) Alabama 11-1  106pa  lw #3
4) Virginia Tech 11-1  186pa  lw #4
5) Stanford 11-1  244pa  lw #5
6) Boise St 10-1  219pa  lw #8
7) Oklahoma St 10-1  300pa  lw #7
8) Wisconsin 10-2  182pa  lw #12
9) Michigan St 10-2  185pa  lw #10
10) Michigan 10-2  206pa  lw #11
11) Georgia 10-2  213pa  lw #13
12) South Carolina 10-2 226pa  lw #14
13) Southern Miss 10-2  246pa  lw #16
14) Arkansas 10-2  273pa  lw #6
15) Oregon 10-2  276pa  lw NR
16) Arkansas St 9-2  218pa  lw #15

Out--Penn State
Just missed--Oklahoma, TCU & Kansas St with all three playing Saturday needing to win & keep their opponents from scoring little & needing teams like Boise St & Arkansas St to lose to have a chance at getting in.  It's all about wins and points against with the previous weeks leading up to this.  You've either taken care of business or you haven't but you might have one last chance Saturday.

We'll see how the weekend plays out and then next week I'll give you my playoff matchups & a little predicting of how this might all play out if my playoff system was a reality.  Heck, right now that #8 vs #9 game is a reality Saturday night with Wisconsin & Michigan St facing off, and that's a nice #7 vs #10 game with Oklahoma St taking on Michigan if it were to start Saturday 12-3.

Stay tuned & we'll lay it all out next week!

And down the stretch they come!

With only a week, maybe two left in the race to make the 16 team tourney here's how things shape up going into the holiday week....

1) LSU 11-0  110pa  lw #1
2) Houston 11-0  235pa  lw #2
3) Alabama 10-1  92pa  lw #5
4) Virginia Tech 10-1  186pa  lw #4
5) Stanford 10-1  230pa  lw #6
6) Arkansas 10-1  232pa  lw #7
7) Oklahoma St 10-1  300pa  lw #3
8) Boise St 9-1  205pa  lw #10
9) Penn St 9-2  143pa  lw #13
10) Michigan St 9-2  168pa  lw #16
11) Michigan 9-2  172pa  lw #14
12) Wisconsin 9-2  175pa  lw #15
13) Georgia 9-2  196pa  lw NR
14) South Carolina 9-2  213pa  lw NR
15) Arkansas St 9-2  218pa  lw NR
16) Southern Miss 9-2  239pa  lw #12

So Southern Miss reward for hanging on and making the #16 spot would be to play the #1 seed LSU in the first round.  Well, at least you're in the dance and anything can happen on any given Saturday.  The #5 Stanford vs #12 Wisconsin matchup would be a beauty with those two QB's going at it, shame one of them would have to lose.  But there is a week to go so lets see how this all settles in, remember I don't count conference championship games so things should be lined up after Saturday.

Here's hoping you all have a good Thanksgiving and thanks for taking time out to read this!

Yes to Penn St & no to conference title games....

I've been asked if I am keeping Penn St in the running to be a playoff team with all that has gone down & the answer is yes.  It's not fair to punish the players for the alleged actions of somebody else.  The other question was about the conferences that have title games.  I don't count those, don't believe in them.  In my world you'd play everybody in your conference once and the last team standing was your champion.  I wouldn't have conferences with more than 10 teams either if I ran the world.  Give you three non conference games and then onto the regular season & everybody would play 12 games.  I know, it's a fantasy world that the conference dictators and ESPN would never go for because the world isn't black & white, it's green with dead presidents on it.  But it's my blog and it's free to dream.

Here is how this weeks standings look with two new teams in and two out & Robert Wuhl is living the dream with his Cougars #2 which would face off against my Wisconsin Badgers in round 1 of the playoffs!  1 & done for one of us Robert, but there are a couple weeks left so we'll see who winds up where!

1) LSU 10-0  107pa  lw #1
2) Houston 10-0  228pa  lw #3
3) Oklahoma St 10-0  263pa  lw #4
4) Virginia Tech 10-1  186pa  lw #8
5) Alabama 9-1  71pa  lw #6
6) Stanford 9-1  202pa  lw #2
7) Arkansas 9-1  215pa  lw #12
8) Oregon 9-1  217pa  lw #11
9) Clemson 9-1  259pa  lw #13
10) Boise St 8-1  170pa  lw #5
11) Oklahoma 8-1  178pa  lw #10
12) Southern Miss 9-2  239pa  lw #9
13) Penn St 8-2  129pa  lw #7
14) Michigan 8-2  155pa  lw #16
15) Wisconsin 8-2  158pa  lw #NR
16) Michigan St 8-2  165pa  lw #NR

Out--Louisiana Lafayette & Cincinnati

Just missed--Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas St, Nebraska, TCU.

Last four are from the Big Ten I noticed.  Some interesting matchups if the playoffs would start this week, but like I said earlier we've got two weeks to go.  I'm thinking Michigan St would give LSU a pretty good fight.

Questions, comments, or concerns?  Let me know & thanks for taking time out to read this.

College Football 16 team playoffs standings week #2...

3 teams fall out so 3 new teams slide in.  Top 3 stay the same & Robert Wuhl's Houston Cougars move up two & my Wisconsin Badgers take a big tumble.  Here's how this weeks standing shape up.....

1) Alabama 8-0  55 points against  last week #1
2) LSU 8-0  92pa  lw #2
3) Clemson 8-0  200pa  lw #3
4) Stanford 7-0  88pa  lw #5
5) Boise St 7-0  113pa  lw #6
6) Kansas St 7-0  148pa  lw #8
7) Houston 7-0  164pa  lw #9
8) Oklahoma St 7-0  188pa  lw#10
9) Penn St 7-1  105pa  lw #11
10) Virginia Tech 7-1  129pa  lw #13--biggest gainer
11) Wisconsin 6-1  95pa  lw #4--biggest drop
12) Michigan St 6-1  96pa  lw not ranked
13) Michigan 6-1  103pa  lw #12
14) Cincinnati 6-1  132pa  lw NR
15) South Carolina 6-1  134pa  lw #15
16) Southern Miss 6-1  135pa  lw NR

Fell out--Oklahoma #7, Illinois #14 & Georgia Tech #16

Lurking below--Oklahoma 6-1 136pa, Oregon 6-1 142pa, Arkansas 6-1 152pa, & Nebraska 6-1 177pa.

Playoffs are a four week format with all games on Saturdays starting in mid-December & ending the first Saturday in Jan with the title game somewhere warm like Miami or Tampa.  All games before the championship at neutral sites halfway between the two teams preferably.  #1 vs #16, #2 vs #15 and so on.  Teams that don't make it can play in the bowl games so they aren't shut out.

My system is based on wins & points against.  I don't care how many points you score, defense wins championships & that's what I reward.  Is my system perfect?  Probably not but it's better than what we have now & comedian/actor/radio sports talk show host Robert Wuhl approves, so what more do you need.

Thanks for taking time out to read & we'll see you back here next week!

College Football 16 team playoff standings week #1...

Welcome back to another year of my college football playoff standings in which 16 teams based on wins and points allowed would be competing over 4 Saturdays as to who is really the #1 team in the nation.  This years playoffs would start Saturday Dec 17th & end with the title game Sat Jan 7th someplace warm like Tampa or Miami.  So without any further delay, here are the standings in week #1....

1) Alabama  7-0  49 points against
2) LSU  7-0  82pa
3) Clemson  7-0  162pa
4) Wisconsin  6-0  58pa
5) Stanford  6-0  67pa
6) Boise St  6-0  87pa
7) Oklahoma  6-0  95pa
8) Kansas St  6-0  117pa
9) Houston  6-0  136pa
10) Oklahoma St  6-0  164pa
11) Penn State  6-1  81pa
12) Michigan  6-1  103pa
13) Virginia Tech  6-1  115pa
14) Illinois  6-1  124pa
15) South Carolina  6-1  134pa
16) Georgia Tech  6-1  169pa

Just missed at 6-1 was Louisiana-Lafayette with 186pa.  Also on the outside looking in right now at 5-1 are Cincinnati, Michigan St, Nebraska, Oregon, Rutgers, SMU, Southern Miss, USC, Washington & West Virginia.

#1 vs #16, #2 vs #15 & so on.  Games played at neutral sites somewhere between the two schools if at all possible.  If you're new to my blog, first let me say welcome, and if you're wondering how I came up with this system I simply used the old saying that defense wins championships.  So I take wins and points allowed as my two variables & come up with my 16 teams.  I didn't want offense because if you run up the score on cream puffs it proves nothing.  So technically you could still schedule a cream puff for the victory, but you'd better keep them off the scoreboard.  The real rubber hits the road come conference time anyway, one loss won't hurt you too badly, but a second one probably will.

The teams that don't make the playoffs can play in the bowl games so it's not like they are shut out.  All playoff games are played on Saturdays so in four weeks you'd have your title game and champion once and for all settled on the field.  I realize it's not a perfect system, but it's better than the nothing we have now I figure.

Your comments are welcome, and again thanks for taking time out to read this!  I'll see you next week with the updated standings!

College football's 16 team playoff pairings...

#1 TCU vs #16 Oklahoma
#2 Auburn vs #15 Utah
#3 Oregon vs #14 Northern Illinois
#4 Ohio St vs #13 Virginia Tech

#5 Stanford vs #12 LSU
#6 Michigan St vs #11 Nebraska
#7 Wisconsin vs #10 Missouri
#8 Nevada vs #9 Boise St

Rankings based on wins and points allowed in a twelve game schedule.  Conference title games aren't included.  Games would start the 2nd Saturday in Dec with all games being played on Saturdays at neutral sites.  Title game would be first Saturday in Jan someplace warm like Tampa or Miami or San Diego.  It would take you four weeks is all and you'd have your true national champion.  Teams that aren't in the top 16 can go to other bowl games and play whenever wherever.

Let me know what you think and see you next year.....
